Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion, caused by excessive and prolonged stress, and it is estimated that almost a third of our population have experienced this condition at some point in their career. Individuals in burnout experience a reduced sense of accomplishment, a loss of personal identity, an inability to cope with ongoing demands, and are at higher risk of significant mental illness and health complications. In a world that glorifies long hours and accomplishment, and with constant expectations of ‘being on’ in the digital space, recognising signs of burnout, and playing the ‘long-game’ more often, are important keys to protect our wellbeing and prevent a damaging crash and burn.
